Build the Business Development Function for a PE-Backed Bay Area Roofing Contractor

No commission book. No competing with your own reps for deals. You open the doors and hand the work to a team of 15 to 20 sales and project managers.

Business development is currently split between two leaders alongside their day jobs. You build the function properly, with the prospecting and marketing infrastructure already funded.

You sit on the senior leadership team and report to the President.

Prove the model in the Bay Area and it scales into Sacramento, new states and acquisition markets.

Benefits

  • KPI-driven variable compensation tied to new customers won, profit growth and strategic partnerships you create
  • Healthcare with an 80% employer contribution, plus a paid upgrade option
  • Dental, vision and a flexible spending account
  • 401(k)
  • Relocation assistance considered case by case for the right person
  • Scope to hire and lead a business development team as the function grows

Opportunity Overview

A full service commercial roofing contractor approaching 25 years in operation, headquartered in San Jose and privately held with private equity investment. It began as a family business and has kept that close knit feel: tenure is long and people typically leave through retirement rather than resignation.

The work is reroofing, maintenance programs and emergency repairs for commercial customers across the San Francisco Bay Area, Napa, Marin and wider Northern California, with regular travel to Sacramento and Monterey. Sacramento is the priority expansion market, and the current ownership plan adds new states and acquisitions.

Onboarding, training, estimating worksheets and sales tools have been rebuilt recently, alongside investment in list building, appointment setting, email marketing, social media and the website.

Your Role

  • Own the top of the funnel: new customer acquisition, strategic accounts and preferred contractor status across the Bay Area, Sacramento and Monterey
  • Create opportunities and pass them to the sales team, holding the customer relationship while operations delivers the work
  • Decide which pursuits are worth the company's time on margin, capacity and probability of award, and work with estimating on the ones that count
  • Set the prospecting standards, CRM discipline, pipeline forecasting and KPIs the business reports growth against
  • Represent the business with owners, developers, GCs, property managers and facility teams at BOMA and industry events, and run ride-alongs with the sales team

Key Requirements

  • Senior business development or sales leadership experience, including managing or leading reps rather than carrying your own number alone
  • A record of winning new commercial customers in roofing, construction, building services, facilities or commercial real estate
  • Credibility with senior decision makers and a real understanding of long, relationship-led construction sales cycles
  • Comfortable owning KPIs, forecasting and CRM discipline in front of a leadership team
  • Living in the San Francisco Bay Area or willing to relocate. This is a field-based role, not remote.
